Spotify Musical Map Helps You Discover New Local Sounds

by Fox Van Allen on July 13, 2015

The Sound of Orlando: Spotify Musical MapLooking for a way to discover new sounds from around the globe? Want a way to check out the hottest tracks and artists in your city right now? If so, take a look at the new Spotify Musical Map – it’s “an interactive audiographic guide” that connects you with the hottest songs in numerous major cities around the globe.

To use the Musical Map, use the controls to zoom in on the city whose music you’d like to explore. Click a green dot to access the associated city’s Spotify playlist link. You can then listen via the Spotify web player, pick and choose your favorites and add them to your own personal playlists.

I took the Spotify Musical Map out for a test drive today, starting with the sounds of my own town of Boston, Massachusetts. Here, Marc Scibilila, Keith Urban and The Chainsmokers are all top artists. In Nashville, Tennesseee, meanwhile, the top artists are Smooth Hound Smith and Moon Taxi – two local bands. When I went global with my search, I was able to discover some highly unusual sound of Stockholm, Sweden. We’ve embedded the map below so you can give it a try yourself.

Each Spotify Musical Map playlist is updated twice per month. To learn more about Eliot Van Buskirk’s Musical Map: Cities of the World, visit the official Spotify blog.
