Does anybody have any information on The Go Computer by First Street?

We weren’t familiar with the Go Computer, but have seen similar computers in the past targeted to seniors.  What the Go Computer offers over a standard PC is a large print keyboard and a custom designed interface that consolidates and simplifies most basic computing functions.

While interesting in concept, we see some major issues with a Go Computer solution.

The first issue is the simplified interface.  While it does make it easy to access basic functions, it also makes it impossible to expand outside the pre-installed applications.  So if there are additional programs you want to run (Skype, Microsoft Word, photo editing, password manager, camera software, games), you’re out of luck.

We also have no way to evaluate how well the proprietary programs work - How good is their virus scanning?  Does the browser block pop-ups?  Does it prevent you from entering phishing sites?  Is there a calendar and reminder function?  Does it have drivers for your printer, camera, webcam, etc.?

Finally, the price is extremely high at $879 for an Intel Atom based PC with 1GB of RAM.  These are the specs of a PC that should be costing somewhere in the $450 range.  Even with the large print keyboard and trackball (which you can easily find online), it’s a lot of money to pay for a custom interface (especially one that is so limiting).

Oh, and did we mention that, in addition to the $879, there’s also a $19.95 monthly fee for their phone support!  Support which is only available from 7am to 7pm Monday - Friday!  So if you have questions, say, at night or on weekends, you’re out of luck.  You would be much better off with a regular computer and getting support from Support.com, where for the same $19.95 you get 24x7 professional support for your computer, camera and all peripherals.

In summary, we think the Go Computer goes too far in equating “senior” with “stupid”.  Old dogs can learn new tricks, if they want to.
