The Volta Racer toy car sped onto the scene last week, is a simple, easy-to-assemble vehicle that provides everything you need to build a working solar-powered car in about fifteen minutes. The solar-powered car kit is a great gift or activity to support STEM development for curious kids and aspiring engineers.
The Volta Racer is made from light-weight, pre-fabricated parts that you can assemble without any special tools. (It goes without saying that you’ll need a sunny day.) What makes the Volta Racer different from other solar-powered cars, is a flexible polycrystalline silicon solar panel, which allows the toy car to capture more of the sun’s energy from various angles.
The car only moves forward in a straight line or in a circle – but is impressive just the same when you realize that it doesn’t use any batteries. It’d be nice if the next generation included steering control, but the Volta Racer is designed for kids to use on a variety of terrains.
The Volta Racer is made by ToyLabs, which specializes in toys and devices to teach kids the principles of science, electronics, and engineering through play.
The Volta Racer is available online on the Toy Labs website for $24.99.
