If you’ve admired the terrific sound and features of the Bose QC Ultra Headphones but were put off by the premium ($449) price tag, there’s good news. Many of the Ultra’s previously exclusive technologies are integrated into Bose’s brand new, more affordable ($359; $90 less) QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen), landing August 13.
What’s hot in this more-for-less deal?
Active Sense technology, introduced in the Ultras, now enhances Bose’s noise canceling in the new headphones in multiple ways. Abrupt noise spikes, like a jackhammer, are dampened even when you’re listening in Aware mode, which intentionally lets outside noises in. Better call quality is promised too, with reduced environmental background noise. This smart, six-microphone-based system also promises better compensation for sound leakage caused by gaps in the earcup seals, a less-than-perfect seal being almost inevitable for eyeglass wearers and anyone whose hair or hat drapes over their ears.
Bose Immersive Audio processing, previously exclusive to the Ultra Series headphones, is also coming to the 2nd gen QCs. Listeners will enjoy soundstage-expanding effects, clearer dialogue in Cinema Mode, and the option to turn off the ANC altogether, a feature some Bose headphone users have begged for, believing that even the maker’s superior noise canceling colors the sound.
Music purists will appreciate a new option for lossless audio playback at resolutions up to 24 bit/48kHz, possible with wired sources plugged into the second-gen QC headphones’ upgraded two-way USB-C port. Both USB-C-to-USB-C and USB-C-to-3.5mm cables are included, the latter for compatibility with analog sources, including in-flight entertainment systems.
That same multitasking port also lets users recharge their headphones while listening, another feature previously exclusive to the Ultras that Bose-aholics have been begging for.
Ergonomics are enhanced too on the 2nd gen QuietComfort Headphones. While the nifty thermal touch controls of the Ultras haven't carried over, Bose is touting improvements in the access and feel of the QC’s physical buttons. New “pill-shaped” earcups and a redesigned sliding headband, both with upgraded faux leather padding, promise enhanced comfort and a sleeker appearance. Color options include Black, White Smoke, and three new limited-edition colors: Eucalyptus Green, Dewdrop Mint, and Rosewood Mauve.

The new QC Headphones will open for preorder beginning August 8 on Bose.com for $359, and start shipping on August 13.
