Pacific Health Sciences is recalling Babies' Magic Tea Baby Sleep Gripe Water, a liquid supplement for babies, after testing by the FDA found it contained methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol alcohol.

According to the FDA, it measured approximately 8.3% ethanol, 0.35% methanol, and 0.48% isopropanol in the bottles. That ethanol level is in the range of a strong craft beer, and should not be in a product made for infants. Methanol is a poison that can cause blindness, organ damage, and death when swallowed in large enough amounts. The FDA notice says the substances may pose a risk depending on how much is consumed and the age and body weight of the child using the product. The company reports no adverse events tied to this lot so far.

How the alcohol got into the bottles is unknown. The notice also does not say how many bottles reached customers, only that they were distributed to Secrets of Tea, which sold them through its own website and other online retailers, including Amazon.

If you have a bottle at home, check the lot number. The affected lot is 25122bw, with a best-before date of 12/2028. It is printed on the bottom of the blue cardboard box and on a side panel of the 4-ounce amber bottle.

Parents and caregivers should stop using any product from that lot. They can throw the bottle away or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

Anyone who has symptoms after using the product should seek medical attention and contact Pacific Health Sciences at 310-457-1775 or myorder@pacifichealth.com. Reactions can also be reported to the FDA's MedWatch program.
