Honeywell DIY Home Security System Has Alexa Built-in

by Barb Gonzalez on January 10, 2018

Longtime home security manufacturer, Honeywell is launching a DIY home security system that Amazon Alexa capabilities built-in.  While its purpose is to act as the base for a security system, it will have the same capabilities and skills of an Amazon Echo or other Amazon Alexa device. So it will not only control Honeywell security system devices but also any other Alexa enabled device, from Philips Hue lightbulbs to Sonos speakers to thermostats and more.

The Honeywell Smart Home Security System bundle includes the camera base station, two infrared motion detectors, window and door opening access sensors and a key fob that works to control the system if you don’t want to use the app or your voice. Motion sensors can be used indoors or outdoors and will send you a notification when they detect activity. You’ll also be notified when a door or window is opened.

The heart of the system is a camera base station with an integrated 1080p high definition camera with a 145-degree viewing angle.  The camera has facial recognition and can be set to push notifications so you can see when your child has arrived home from school—and whether he has brought friends. The camera has a manual privacy shutter for those times you don’t want it spying on you. The system comes with 24 hours of cloud storage (soon to be expanded to three days). Its microphone can detect noises in the house and has audio analytics that knows the difference between a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm and a dog barking or other loud noise.

The Home Security System (and any connected devices) can run on a timed schedule or user-created scenes and can be triggered by location-based geofencing. That means that the system will detect when you have left the house or arrived and will turn features on or off accordingly.

There is no need for professional installation. The Honeywell security system is paired with a smartphone app.  The app can be used to set up preferences to suit your home and lifestyle.  It sends you push notifications, and video from the camera base station can be viewed when you are away from home.

The Home Security System bundle pricing starts at $499.
