Once you’ve planned your next road trip getaway, you’ll want to consult these apps along your route to help make for a smooth trip and account for a variety of situations.

iExitiExit

iExit transforms your phone into a portable GPS device delivering real time information on the restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, hospitals or hotels and more at each exit while driving along the freeway. If you're wondering whether you can wait a few more exits to fill up the tank, iExit delivers this info and more. The cost is $0.99 on iTunes and is free for a limited time for Android devices.

Sit or Squat

This app has been around for a while, but it's worth referencing it again for those times that you just have to find your nearest restroom and don't know what direction to head in first. Sit or Squat allows you to search and view restrooms nearest your current location with ratings provided by users. Currently there are only 100,000 bathrooms in their database, but the app is free on the iOS and Android devices.

Gas BuddyGas Buddy

Gas Buddy is a clever way to not only save money but also to earn points that go toward prizing and giveaways when your contribute gas price of your own to the app. Gas Buddy is free for iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone.

KIDzOUT

KIDzOUT provides relevant kid-friendly information easily bucketed into four areas: Diaper Deck, Food, Play and Medical so you can find parks, restaurants, play places, medical facilities and more for whenever you travel. KIDzOUT boasts a proprietary database of 260,000 locations to search across, and is free for iOS devices.

Roadside AmericaRoadside America

Roadside America answers the age old question of "how close are we to the world's biggest ball of twine." With 7,800+ locations in its database, Roadside America showcases the strange and mundane along with fun facts that you might not otherwise have known as you head to your next destination. Optional in-app purchases will unlock additional content. Roadside America costs $2.99 on iTunes store and an Android app is in development.

Hotel Tonight

Hotel Tonight provides last minute same-day travel deals (sometimes up to 70% off) up until 2 a.m. that evening when you're out on the road and around one of the major cities or airport locations that they support. The intuitive design makes it easy to locate and book a hotel on the fly. Hotel Tonight is free on iTunes and Google Play.

Gas Buddy is the best!

From Alison Hamilton Grosso on June 13, 2012 :: 10:49 am

We use Gas Buddy all the time - and are often amazed at the differences in gas prices if one wants to drive a mile or 2 away from the busy intersections. I also try to update any gas prices that I see, helping to keep the app fresh and up to date. If a gas station hasn’t been updated recently, the previous price is deleted by the app, eliminating mistakes. Highly recommended!

Out of Milk

One of my fave apps is out of milk—a grocery list app which works beautifully and is free. I understand it only works for droid and not iphone.
