Viola Player's Reaction to a Cell Phone Ring During Concert

by Josh Kirschner on January 24, 2012

What do you do when a cell phone goes off in the middle of your concert? Viola player Lukas Kmit was faced with that question while playing in Presov, Slovakia.

Just as Kmit begins a quiet passage of the Allemande from Bach's Cello Suite No. 5, the well-known Nokia ringtone breaks the silence. Rather than stop the concert, Kmit does something far more clever — both to entertain his audience and call out the culprit.

My Toastmasters club has three different ways of fundraising at our regular meetings. We “fine” our members:

1. Unnecessary “ums” or “ahs” are 10 cents each
2. Forgetting to use the vocabulary “word of the day” is 25 cents
3. Having your cell phone go off in the middle of someone’s presentation is one dollar

His graciousness speaks volumes.  Did he finish the piece after that?

Terrific quick thinking in the face of such boorish behavior.  I’m reminded of the recent news story of the ringtone that interrupted a recent performance of the New York Philharmonic.  There the conductor stopped the performance.  What was particularly galling is that in that instance, the person who owned the phone, tried to ignore it as if he wasn’t the guilty party!  I immediately turn off my phone when entering a theatre or concert hall.  I astonished by those who don’t.

I could really use a very portable laptop to take with me when I travel.  The netbook I take now is pretty worthless.
