How to Block Caller ID on Your Phone

by Elizabeth Harper on December 17, 2019

Everyone has caller ID these days, but sometimes you want to block your phone number when you make a call. Fortunately, blocking your phone number is pretty easy to do - simply follow these steps for your Android phone, iPhone or your home phone.

How to permanently block your number on an Android Phone

Android 10

  1. Open the Phone app
  2. Open the menu in the top right
  3. Select "Settings" from the dropdown
  4. Click "Calls"
  5. Click "Additional settings"
  6. Click "Caller ID"
  7. Select "Hide number"

Android 9

  1. Open the Phone app
  2. Open the menu in the top right
  3. Select "Settings" from the dropdown
  4. Click "More settings"
  5. Click "Caller ID"
  6. Select "Hide number"

Your number will be blocked until you turn the feature off again by repeating the same steps and selecting "Show number."  Be aware that menu names could vary depending on the version of Android you're running and device manufacturer.

How to permanently block your number on an iPhone

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Click "Phone"
  3. Click "Show My Caller ID"
  4. Toggle the option off

Just like with Android, your caller ID will be blocked until you repeat the steps and toggle "Show My Caller ID" on again.

While the above instructions will usually work, Verizon won't let you block caller ID from your iPhone. You can, however, disable caller ID using the Verizon app or website. Fire up the My Version app on your smartphone and follow these steps:

  1. Open the menu in the top left
  2. Click "Devices"
  3. Click "Manage" next to the device you want to block caller ID on
  4. Click "Controls"
  5. Click "Adjust Service blocks"
  6. Toggle "Caller ID Blocking" on.

You can also block caller ID through the My Verizon webpage by following similar steps. Go to the Blocks page, pick the phone number you want to block caller ID on, click "Block Services," toggle "Caller ID Blocking" on and submit the changes.

How to permanently block your number on your home phone

While mobile phones offer easy ways to permanently block your number, your landline doesn't. You may be able to block your caller ID from your phone provider's website, so check there first — VOIP services are particularly likely to offer some kind of simple option to block your caller ID information. But if you have a traditional landline, you'll probably have to call their customer service number (check out our tips on the fastest way to reach a customer service rep).

If you want to unblock your number for one call, all you have to do is dial *82 before the 10-digit phone number. Your number will be unblocked for that call only.

How to temporarily block your number on any phone

Keying *67 before the phone number will block your caller ID on the call you're making — and it works for both mobile and landline phones. Whoever you call will see "private number," "unavailable," or something similar on their caller ID instead of your phone number. Once you've ended the call, your next call will display your caller ID as normal.

If you know that you'll want your number blocked every time you call a number, save it to your address book with the *67 in front of the number.

Be aware *67 doesn’t always block your ID.  I was calling clients and having them call me backc when I thought my ID was blocked using *67.  I was told #31# worked better and I have been using it ever since with success.

There is no “calls” choice under “settings” on my Samsung S9 phone running Android 9.

I just updated the article for caller ID blocking on Android 10 yesterday! I’ve added back in the settings for Android 9, as well. Unfortunately, I don’t have a Samsung S9 handy to test on, but with a Samsung S8 (Android 8), the commands above for Android 9 are pretty close.

Android 10 on Nokia 7.2 (Android One).
There is no “Calls” section in the settings menu.

On Android 10 (Nokia 7.2 / Android One)
- open the phone app
- tap the three dots for settings
- tap “Calling accounts”
- under “Settings” tap on the SIM card icon with the name of the telco for which you want to make the change (the 7.2 is a dual SIM phone)
- tap “Additional settings”
- tap “Caller ID”
- select between Network default / Hide number / Show number

I have Android9, so now I can do it myself. Thank you for sharing these tips step by step. The good thing is this article talks about both permanent and temporary blocking. Thank you so much for writing such article, it is really nice.

I have a Samsung S-8.  I want to be able to block my caller ID when making a call and nothing shown on this list works.  Info listed for S-9 above is N/A to the S-8.  If anyone with an S-8 has a solution for me I will appreciate it.

Also Apple won’t let you block caller ID from your iPhone if you use Sprint as well

Is there some way to block the numbers I am seeing from telemarketers?? I get at least 20 calls a day.

My caller ID is permanently hidden from others somehow (I managed to do it years back) and I want to unhide it now. But there’s nothing in the phone settings to show/hide my own caller ID.

Iphone X on latest iOS, using Xfinity mobile.
